The 74 members of class 52, known as the 'Westerns', represented the last class of diesel-hydraulic express locomotives introduced by BR's Western Region. With the final examples not being withdrawn until early 1977, these proved to be the most long-lived of the diesel-hydraulic classes built for BR's Western Region.
