After the Japanese attack on Pearl harbour in December 1941, the British government had an urgent need for Japanese linguists. As the School of Oriental and African Studies estimated it would take an absolute minimum of two years to train someone in Japanese, Oswald Tuck, a retired naval officer, was brought in to run a special school in Bedford. Bernard O’Connor’s booklet, ‘The Bedford Spy School’, tells the story of how 100 ‘students’ were taught Japanese. After an intensive six-week course, more than half of the ‘graduates’ went to work at Bletchley Park, Britain's top secret code breaking centre. Others went overseas to help in translating and interpreting work for the Foreign Office or the Armed Services.
