Mello's ingenious plan to get the notebook succeeds and he learns about the fake "13 day rule", but the Japanese investigation team manages to regain the notebook and Mello is forced into hiding. But retrieving the death note is not without cost, and Soichiro Yagami is fatally wounded after a series of further incidents in the U.S. Mello and Near exchange information. After learning of the fake "13 day rule", Near begins to suspect that the new L is Kira, and starts to stir things up in the Japanese taskforce. Meanwhile, Light has Misa abandon ownership of her death note to make sure no evidence can be linked to her, and chooses Mikami, a Kira follower, as the next Kira, but Light is under surveillance and unable to give direct orders to his new protege. By coincidence, Mikami choose Takada, a NHN announcer and Light's college girlfriend, as the new spokesperson for Kira. Light seizes the oppirtunity, and succeeds in contacting Mikami through Takada.
